Brief description

Holman Improved Rudder, length 1440mm , 70mm diameter stock. In 1856 John Holman received a patent for his invention of an improved rudder design, which did not rely on pintles for its security. Loss and damage to the conventional rudder were caused by the wave motion causing the rudder to "shake" and in so doing to loosen the wooden ends where the rudder was joined to the sternpost of the vessel, eventually causing these fixings to be carried away. His invention of the Patent Improved Rudder enabled it also to be removed under water and brought up to be repaired. This example was donated by his great grand-daughter Dorothy Holman.
