Brief description

Silver Gilt Goblet, inscribed 'R.H.' (Richard Holman (1766-1824)), award for beating off privateer; CAPTAIN RICHARD HOLMAN (1776-1824); Richard, Uncle of John Holman (1800-1863) was a Master Mariner who gained fame during the Napoleonic Wars when he beat off an attack by French privateers off Ushant in 1812. He was rewarded by the presentation of at least 2 SILVER GOBLETS, one from Lloyds, and the second (2719.2), probably given by a merchant whose goods were saved. The goblet was kindly donated by Mrs Mary Bennett, a descendant of Catherine Holman who was a niece of Richard Holman.
